And since wiki skipped over season 2:

In season two, the theme of the show centers around the relationships of the players instead of the swimming aspect. While most of the focus is centered on Haru and Rin, Rei does get some limelight of his own.

The two biggest moments for him dealt with what happened around the Regionals and when Nagisa ran away from home. After Haru's breakdown at the Regionals, Rei tries to talk to Haru about how he can still swim the way he wants (Free) and still be in competition. During the festival, and right before the nationals Rei talks to Haru again. During that talk, Rei talks to Haru and tells him just how inspired he was after watching him swim, and that he hopes that Haru would continue to inspire others.

The other time that Rei had the light shone on him was during the time where Nagisa ran away from home. After finding out that Nagisa had ran away from home (because his parents were going to make him quit the swim team to focus on his schoolwork) Rei was right there to offer his support and protection to his best friend until he was ready to confront his parents.

Personality:

At first glance, Rei looks like your stereotypical megane. Calm, cool, collected and intelligent. But speaking with him for more than five minutes will quickly show you more about him. Because above all that, Rei Ryugazaki is a major and total dweeb.

With a bare basic look at Rei, you can quickly figure out a few of his traits. He is tall, very athletic and proper, and has a style that is completely his own. He takes the time to properly buckle up the straps of his book-bag and tuck in his shirt - even when the situation doesn't require him to tuck his shirt in, or even fully button it. That sense of properly doing things comes from his analytical and theory-based mind. "It's a sport known for beautiful events such as pole vaulting. You can attain the perfect form through theory and calculation!"

Rei doesn't often dwell on things that he deems as useless or a waste of his time. For instance, one of his arguments about why he refused to swim was because to him, "Humans evolved to live on land! Why would you go backward and play sports in water? It defies reason! Don't forget the water has 12 to 13 times the viscosity of air!" But Rei has used mathematics and theory to help him before even taking up a spot on the swim team. During his time on the track team, Rei often used theory with his jumps,"Bar height: 4.20 meters. Set takeoff speed to v. Set acceleration to a. Gravity is g. If the corner of gravity after taking into account pole length is h, then the angle of approach... (...) I miscalculated the angle of approach." But, that theoretical point of view began to hold him back from reaching beauty and perfection on the track team. Which, luckily enough, coincided perfectly with Nagisa's constant harping to have him join the swim team.

Despite how many times he said that he would not join the swim team, he eventually relented after witnessing Haruka's swimming hit on one of his major pings. Haru is a very beautiful swimmer, and after watching him at the meeting, it inspired Rei to join the team. Rei loves everything beautiful, and he confessed that he only joined in sports that he deemed as beautiful. His sense of beauty isn't just fashion and sports related but it also extends to other factors. For instance- he bases his meals off of color theory, and during the club's attempt to gain more followers his entrance had a certain flair. Among the few things Rei does not deem as beautiful was how much he floundered while first learning how to swim, along with, in the second season, confessing that he was going to Rin for assistance.

"—But eventually you ended in the Swim Club. Why the change of heart?
Well, it is kind of a long story but……. Nagisa-kun was the one who convinced me to join the swim team, and afterward, I was able to see the allure of swimming, and I also wanted to swim like Haruka-senpai so…"

"—Thank you very much. So, for Ryugazaki Rei, what exactly is swimming to you?
It is something that theories and calculations cannot grasp — a beautiful and unknown world."

Another thing that Rei finds unbeautiful is an embarrassment, which goes hand in hand with his sense of dramatics. Rei has a very dramatic flair in the way that he talks and often goes overboard in his reactions. For Instance, when he was having issues after he perfected the theory side of swimming he went into a rather interesting spew about how it was the swim suit's fault as to why he could not swim right. Or when Rei had fallen for Nagisa's trick during the water gun fault, he gave an over-the-top reenactment of his death complete with him spewing out water as if it were blood. Rin is one of the many people besides Nagisa that provokes the most outbursts from Rei.

Rei gives his 100% into everything he does- so much so that if he places himself into a role, he easily forgets the main reason he'd done so. For example, when Nagisa ran away from home, he placed himself so deeply into the frame of mind of a detective that when he left the room he had forgotten the original reason why he went in the room, in the first place. He did the same again when he placed himself into detective mode and trailed after Rin. Rei basically did the same thing a child would when given a pretend spy mission. He trailed after his target and stalked him, and even resorted to wearing a mask to disguise his face -even though it was very obvious it was still him.

One of Rei's negative traits is that fact that he can be very overconfident in himself. He believes the only thing he needs to master is the theory behind something. That is one of the reasons why swimming was so difficult for him. Despite the number of books he read and training he put himself through, he could not improve his swimming. That overconfidence, combined with his need to be the best, nearly proved to be his undoing when he tried to swim by himself into the ocean and nearly drown.

Despite how overconfident he seems, sometimes that confidence comes off as more of a mask. He has been shown to admit it when he gets nervous. For example, he stated that the reason why he went to Rin to learn other strokes was that he does not feel he should be referred to as 'sempai' if he could only master one swimming style.

Rei is a very hard worker and a thoughtful person. Despite the challenge of learning how to swim in a matter of a week, Rei gave his best into memorizing everything he could about swimming, even branching into other aspects of the swimming world such as aerodynamics, water resistance, and even swimwear suits. Keep in mind that this was on top of all of his other classes. Rei' thoughtful side is often seen in the way he handled Rin and Haru's relationship towards the end of season one and into season two. Despite the fact that Rei was looking forward to joining the team in the relay race, he gave his spot to Rin so that his new friends could do one more relay with their original team. He also showed his tender side after Haru's break down when he went to the person who was causing the uproar and directly confronted them. He asked Rin what his intentions were with Haru, and stated that if Rin was playing games, he was not going to back down against him. Rei is a very straightforward person when dealing with problems, and he tends to notice small things about the others that often go unnoticed.

"—Why did you decide to meet up with Rin-kun?
It is because I understood Haruka-senpai and the others’ feelings. However, I still did not understand why he acted the way he did. If you do not understand something, you should directly approach that person. With that in mind, I went by my own intuition to do so."

Overall, Rei is very emotional. You can tell how he is feeling just by looking at his face. When he is happy, he just oozes with confidence and dramatic flair. When he is embarrassed, he will stutter, flounder and spaz. And when he is sad, you can be sure that there will be tears in his eyes. Rei was the first of the group to burst into tears when they were talking about no longer doing relays together after the final relay of the season was over. And when Rei is angry, you sure will know it when he confronts you about whatever is bothering him, or when he indignantly yells at you to quit it out.

Roleplay Sample:

[Let it be said that if Rei Ryugazaki was to do something, that he would never do it half-assed. That included his first ever molting session. Rei was fully prepared. He has essential oils made with various scents, Chamomile and Lavender to help with any stress and fears he has. Mandarin to help with Agitation. Jasmine and Rose to help with fatigue and sadness. But that was not the only way that the naga had prepared himself for his first molt. He had also filled his bedroom with bright beautiful colors aiming to stack their effects to help him with his moods and situation. Magenta to help with mental and emotional balance and acceptance, deep shades of blue to help with itchiness, and skin conditions, Red for courage and excitement. And of course it was only natural for Rei to take into consideration all the various self help pamphlets that he could get his hands on. Amoungst the brightly colored scarves and pillows that lined his bedroom, Rei had stacked a vast amount of water bottles and misters. Coiling his tail around himself in contentment, Rei couldn't help the rather boastful laugh as he placed his arms on his hips.]

Perfect! Simply perfect~! According to every source of reading material I have touched upon the pinnacle of a perfectly healthy mind, body, and soul. There's aromatherapy, color theory, and just the right amount of proper skin care~! My scales will fetch a rather hefty price if I may say so myself.
